16世紀初頭に、英語の「bone-fire」（骨を燃やす火）から派生したもので、ウルリッヒ・ツヴィングリが1527年に出版した「De Canone Missæ」の中で「bonfire」という言葉を初めて使用した。We built a bonfire in the garden on the winter solstice.
冬至の夜、庭でかがり火を焚いた。
